As part of ArborMotion’s ongoing dedication to education and perpetual learning, we like to spotlight the various learning facilities in our city. This month spotlights Summers-Knoll School which has the honor of being Ann Arbor’s first certified Michigan Green School. Tucked away on Manchester Road and nestled against County Farm Park, Summers-Knoll is a unique school dedicated to teaching its exceptional students in small class settings. On my tour of the school with Head of School Joanna Hastings, I was able to sit in and observe students who were engaged enough in their lessons to not notice my presence. It was a similar strength of focus that allowed Summers-Knoll to achieve the Green School designation. Achieving the Green School designation is accomplished by administering ten of the possible twenty energy saving and environmental activities as outlined in the Michigan Green School Law. I was particularly impressed with the compost piles that are nurtured daily by the scraps leftover from the students’ organic lunches. Some pictures on the wall suggested that the experimental solar cookout probably fed the mind more than the stomach but was well received none the less. Check out www.summers-knoll.org for more information regarding the school and some of its unique summer programs and curricula. In addition to providing Road Scholar vehicle inspections on select dates throughout the summer, ArborMotion is also working with Summers-Knoll school to create a fundraising scrip program.
